ਬਾਬਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਜੀ

ਬਾਬਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਜੀ (1506–1631) ਸਿੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸਤਿਕਾਰਯੋਗ ਅਤੇ ਮਹਾਨ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਵਜੋਂ ਮੰਨੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ, ਜੋ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਥਾਪਕ ਸਨ, ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਨ। ਬਾਬਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਕੱਥੂ ਨੰਗਲ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਛੋਟੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਅਸੀਸ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਚੁਣਿਆ। ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ "ਬੁੱਢਾ" ਨਾਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਜਿਸਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨ ਜਾਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ, ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੱਚੇ ਸਨ, ਪਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਪੱਕੇ ਤੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ। ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਬਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਜੀ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਮ ਲਈ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਕ ਸ਼ਖਸੀਅਤ ਬਣ ਗਏ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਿਮਰਤਾ, ਅਨੁਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਦਾ ਜੀਵੰਤ ਰੂਪ ਦਰਸਾਇਆ।
ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਾਬਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਤੱਕ ਛੇ ਗੁਰੂਆਂ ਦੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਲਗਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇੱਕ ਨਿਸ਼ਠਾਵਾਨ ਸਿੱਖ ਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ, ਸਗੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਵੀ ਸੀ। ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰੀਆਂ ਸੌਂਪੀਆਂ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਪੰਜ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੁਰਗੱਦੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਕਰਨਾ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਸਿੱਖ ਪੰਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸੀਮ ਭਰੋਸੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਦਰ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਸੀ। ਬਾਬਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਦੇ ਆਲੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੀ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਲੰਗਰ ਲਈ ਅਨਾਜ ਉਗਾ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਮਿਹਨਤ, ਨਿਮਰਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਰੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਮਿਸਾਲ ਕਾਇਮ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਬਾਬਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਤੱਕ ਹੀ ਸੀਮਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹੇ, ਸਗੋਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਮ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਬਦਲਦੇ ਸਮਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਹਿਨੁਮਾਈ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਧਾਂਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਇਮ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਲਈ ਖ਼ਾਸਕਰ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਘੜੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੌਸਲੇ ਅਤੇ ਤਾਕਤ ਦਾ ਸਰੋਤ ਰਹੀ। ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਭਰ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਬਾਬਾ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਭਰ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ, ਗੁਰਮਤ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਨਿਮਰਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਅਟੱਲ ਵਚਨਬੱਧਤਾ ਲਈ ਸਤਿਕਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਅਮਰ ਮਿਸਾਲ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਨਿਸ਼ਕਾਮ ਭਗਤੀ ਕੌਮ ਨੂੰ ਪੀੜੀਆਂ ਤੱਕ ਉਭਾਰ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

Baba Buddha Ji

Baba Buddha Ji (1506–1631) holds a deeply revered place in Sikh history as one of the most prominent and respected Sikhs of Guru Nanak Sahib Ji, the founder of Sikhism. Born in the village of Katthu Nangal near Amritsar, he was blessed by Guru Nanak at a very young age when he expressed a yearning for spiritual wisdom instead of worldly pleasures. It was Guru Nanak himself who gave him the title “Buddha” (meaning wise or old) despite his youth, recognizing his spiritual maturity and devotion. From that moment on, Baba Buddha Ji became a guiding figure in the Sikh community, embodying humility, discipline, and service.
Throughout his life, Baba Buddha Ji served with utmost dedication to six Sikh Gurus, from Guru Nanak to Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. His role was not only that of a devoted Sikh but also of a spiritual authority. He was entrusted with significant responsibilities, such as performing the ceremonial anointment (Gurgaddi) of five successive Gurus, a task that highlighted the immense trust and respect he commanded within the Panth. Baba Buddha Ji also tended to the land around Amritsar, helping with the seva of growing food for the Guru’s langar, and set an example of living a life rooted in hard work, humility, and devotion.
Baba Buddha Ji’s contributions extended beyond spiritual leadership to shaping the Sikh community’s discipline and resilience. He guided Sikhs during times of transition and helped uphold the principles of Gurbani and Seva. His deep wisdom was a source of comfort and strength for the Gurus and their followers, particularly during challenging times. Even today, Sikhs worldwide honor Baba Buddha Ji’s memory for his lifelong devotion, his role in preserving the Guru’s teachings, and his unwavering commitment to service and humility. His life remains a shining example of how selfless devotion can uplift and sustain a community across generations.

ਸਾਰਾਗੜ੍ਹੀ ਦੀ ਲੜਾਈ

ਸਰਾਗੜ੍ਹੀ ਦੀ ਲੜਾਈ 12 ਸਤੰਬਰ 1897 ਨੂੰ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਸੈਨਿਕ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਮਹਾਨ ਆਖ਼ਰੀ ਲੜਾਈਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਵਜੋਂ ਯਾਦ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਜੰਗ ਉੱਤਰੀ-ਪੱਛਮੀ ਸਰਹੱਦੀ ਸੂਬੇ (ਜੋ ਹੁਣ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ) ਵਿੱਚ ਲੜੀ ਗਈ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਆਰਮੀ ਦੀ 36ਵੀਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਰੈਜੀਮੈਂਟ ਦੇ ਕੇਵਲ 21 ਜਵਾਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਲਗਭਗ 10,000–12,000 ਅਫਗਾਨ ਕਬਾਈਲੀ ਯੋਧਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਸਿੱਖ ਜਵਾਨ ਸਰਾਗੜ੍ਹੀ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟੇ ਸਿਗਨਲ ਪੋਸਟ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ, ਜੋ ਫੋਰਟ ਲੌਕਹਾਰਟ ਅਤੇ ਫੋਰਟ ਗੁਲਿਸਤਾਨ ਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਵੱਡੇ ਕਿਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਸੀ। ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਘੱਟ ਸਨ, ਪਰ ਸਿਪਾਹੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਖ਼ਰੀ ਸਾਹ ਤੱਕ ਲੜਨ ਦਾ ਫ਼ੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਮਿਸਾਲ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਅਤੇ ਫਰਜ਼ ਨਿਭਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਮਿਸਾਲ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਹੌਲਦਾਰ ਈਸ਼ਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਹੇਠ, ਸਿੱਖ ਸਿਪਾਹੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਕਈ ਘੰਟਿਆਂ ਤੱਕ ਬਹਾਦਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੰਗ ਲੜੀ ਅਤੇ ਹਮਲਾਵਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਿਆ। ਹਰ ਜਵਾਨ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਤੱਕ ਡਟ ਕੇ ਲੜਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਾਨ ਨਿਛਾਵਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਨੇੜਲੇ ਕਿਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਮਲੇ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਹਾਦਰੀ ਲਈ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਦੇ ਜਜ਼ਬੇ, ਹੌਸਲੇ ਅਤੇ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਦੀ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਵੀ ਯਾਦ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਅੱਜ ਸਰਾਗੜ੍ਹੀ ਦੀ ਲੜਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਸਾਲ ਸਰਾਗੜ੍ਹੀ ਦਿਵਸ ਵਜੋਂ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ 21 ਸਿੱਖ ਸ਼ਹੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਨਦਾਰ ਵਿਰਾਸਤ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਅਸੰਭਵ ਹਾਲਾਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਾਨ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ।

Battle of Saragarhi

The Battle of Saragarhi took place on September 12, 1897, and is remembered as one of the greatest last stands in military history. It was fought in the North-West Frontier Province (now in Pakistan), where 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment of the British Indian Army faced an estimated 10,000–12,000 Afghan tribal fighters. The Sikhs were defending a small signaling post at Saragarhi, which connected two larger forts, Fort Lockhart and Fort Gulistan. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the soldiers chose to fight to the last breath rather than surrender, demonstrating extraordinary courage and commitment to duty.
Led by Havildar Ishar Singh, the Sikh soldiers fought fiercely for several hours, holding off wave after wave of attackers. Each soldier fought until he was killed, buying critical time for the nearby forts to prepare against assault. Their sacrifice is remembered not just for the sheer bravery but also for the spirit of resilience and honor it symbolizes. Today, the Battle of Saragarhi is commemorated annually, as Saragarhi Day, honoring the legacy of these 21 Sikh warriors who laid down their lives in the face of impossible odds.
